February is Black History Month

We honor Black History Month every year in February.

The Reverend Howard Johnson of Roseburg, OR, spoke with AAUW Roseburg and League members on 2/7/23. Here’s the link to the video recording now on YouTube. Please ‘like’ this very interesting Black History Month celebration.

On August 28, 1963, standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial—a monument to the president who a century earlier had brought down the institution of slavery in the United States—Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his vision of a future in which “this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” From History.com

The speech and march cemented King’s reputation at home and abroad; later that year he was named “Man of the Year” by TIME magazine and in 1964 became, at the time, the youngest person ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
