#GivingTuesday – 11/29/16

#GivingTuesday is official worldwide. It’s a day of Global Giving to the community efforts that you choose.

Whether it is for endeavors across the seas or here at homelwvor-tattoo-dark-reda, it is time to show your community spirit in a way you choose.

One way would be to support your local League of Women Voters of Umpqua Valley (LWVUV). Our League has been active in Douglas County, Oregon since 1961. Abigail Scott Dunaway (1834-1905) is regarded as Oregon’s leading suffragist. Susan B. Anthony visited Roseburg and other burgs in Oregon several times when she was alive.

Many do not know or understand that while the League of Women Voters is a political organization we do not support or oppose political parties or candidates. That makes us “nonpartisan”. We support or oppose issues.

Help us help our community by making a generous donation made out to LWVUV and mailed to:

LWVUV
PO Box 2434
Roseburg, OR 97470

With your help we will do our best to inform Oregonians and Douglas County residents on the issues at hand. You can follow our Facebook page too at: https://www.facebook.com/LWVUV.

Please join us at our meetings. Check our calendar often: https://lwvuv.wordpress.com/calendar/. Democracy needs active supporters!

Thank you! Have a great end of 2016 and the best 2017!!

No Pipelines!

Save the Date and Bring Your Plate
November 13, 2016 – 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Douglas County Main Library, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd., Roseburgamericana-69

Unified in our opposition against the Pacific Connector Gas Pipeline [PCGP], Landowners United, Pipeline Awareness Southern Oregon, and Rogue Climate will be hosting a casual and informational afternoon to update landowners and the public on current activities surrounding the Pacific Connector Gas Pipeline and the Jordan Cove LNG Energy Projects. Both projects remain denied by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission [FERC] and yet the State of Oregon and Douglas County Commissioners’ allow permits and permitting processes to continue in spite of the fact that without FERC approval there can be no project. It makes no sense!

There will be informational tabling by organizations involved in opposition efforts against the Pipeline and a panel discussion featuring speakers who can offer insights and answer questions about where we are today regarding Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake and Tsunami threats, Department of State Lands and Department of Environmental Quality Permits and the Douglas County Conditional Use Permit. Landowners continue to be pressured by land agents working for Veresen, Inc., the Canadian Company who now has the controlling interest in the PCGP. We know they are securing title reports and targeting landowners with liens against their properties. Offers are worded to suggest that signing incentives are separate from the main proposal but are instead included in the total easement deal.

Please join us on November 13th, for a good old fashioned community potluck – break bread with your neighbors and find out what’s next in protecting the privacy and property in your community. Bring your favorite dish to share, your own plates, utensils and beverage of choice. We will provide coffee, water and the latest news. Share your story, share your company!

Don’t Forget to Vote for Library District Directors!

There are six Douglas County citizens running for five Library Board positions. Be sure to vote for that part of creating our new library district as well as for Measure 10-145.

All of the candidates listed on your ballot are trustworthy and competent supporters. However, with the five positions and six candidates it is possible that write-in candidates who oppose the measure may be elected to the board. Two such write-in candidates are currently hoping to get on the new library system’s board of directors and both are staunch anti-tax adherents who oppose our measure. We urge you to choose any of the five people whose names are on the ballot, but please be sure to fill in those little ovals.
